Green Building

Since the day we started building homes we have been green-minded. One of the “greenest” things we have always done is to build homes of the HIGHEST quality; homes that won’t end up in a landfill within 100 years. As we have evolved, so have our building practices, the materials we use and the manner in which they are installed. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of “green builders” in Western North Carolina. What separates Standing Stone Builders from the pack is the high-quality manner in which the green products, materials and mechanicals are implemented. There are many green options that can be integrated into a home. We help you choose the green approaches that are best for you. Decisions are often based on your budget and your desire to keep our world a greener place.

Some of our Green Approaches

  • Orientation of home on the site (to maximize passive solar opportunities and reduce heat gain or heat loss)
  • Milling and installation of lumber harvested from home site
  • Highly reduced materials waste
  • Recycling of otherwise “wasted” materials
  • Highly efficient heating and cooling systems (i.e. geothermal heat pump system)
  • Blower door and duct blaster tests
  • Tightly insulated homes (sprayed foam, cellulose, etc.)
  • Indoor air quality via ERV (energy recovery ventilator) and “make-up” air
  • Radon mitigation systems
  • Tankless hot water heaters
  • Ground-source water heating
  • Rainwater harvesting
  • Metal roofing
  • Sealed crawl spaces
  • Permeable materials for hardscapes
  • Framing techniques allowing for maximum insulation and minimal material waste
  • Erosion control
  • ENERGY STAR rated appliances, mechanicals and fixtures
  • Low-toxic adhesives, primers and pest spray
  • Low VOC finishes
  • Formaldehyde-free materials
